HOUSTON WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSOCIATION MINUTES OF MEETING

April 25, 2001

 

The meeting was called to order by Jen Cooper, President, at Saengerbund Hall at 7:30 p.m.

 

ROLL CALL

Women's Teams Absent: None

                                   

Coed Teams Absent:  Amistad, Hit Squad, Scorpions, Spring Branch, Stingers, Synergy, Team Thunder, TNT

                                                                              

New Teams Present: None

 

Board Members Absent: Tom Warzywak –Registar, Stephen Jump- Field Coordinator

 

MINUTES:

Minutes from the April 4, 2001 meeting were approved as submitted.

 

OFFICER REPORTS

President:

1.      Kevin New of Orange Crush presented the winners of the HWSA scholarships.

Stacy Barton of Katy High School is planning to attend A&M University.

Sarah Dearing of Cyfair High School is planning to attend Baylor University.

Christina Solis of Lamar High School is planning to attend A&M University.

Each winner received a check for 1,000 dollars and an HWSA T-shirt. Congratulations to the winners. THANKS KEVIN for handling the committee.

2.      HWSA needs a few volunteers to help with concessions at the Quickfoot 6v6 Tournament on May 19 at Bear Creek. Let Jen or Patti know if you are interested. To play in the tournament, check the website. Deadline is May 9.

3.      We need a new Coed Membership coordinator, so if you are interested see Jen.

4.      Houston Hurricanes are giving FREE ADMISSION to all current players. Must show current players cards, however be careful not to lose your players’ cards.

 

Vice president:

Bill Link was late. Tom Whitehurst reported the findings of the D&P committee:

1. Gustavo Castro of coed team 1800s accused of assaulting referee. He was suspended for 15 games. A double grievance was filed in mid February – coed team Voyagen filed against Orange Crush and vice versa. The result: the Voyagen team rep was suspended for 3 games. And Bill Link of Orange Crush was admonished for unsporting conduct.  Referee abuse and assault (both verbal and physical) are taken very seriously by the league, and also must be reported to the state D&P committee.

      

Secretary:

    Please pay outstanding fines for yellow cards, red cards and missed meetings.

 

Registrar:

Tom Warzywak was absent. Jen presided.

1.      Some player cards are missing the name of their teams so please call or e-mail Tom if you have not received all your player cards.

2.      Spring registration is closed.

 

Treasurer:

  1. When you pay fines, make sure that your check is properly labeled with your team name and the word “fines.”
  2. Budget report: 2000/2001 BY receipts of $81,000; expenses of $72,000; General checking account at $32,000, large checks to state not deducted yet. Money Market account at $1680.
  3. The Alief light fund has used $3,900 since January, we have a balance of $12,100.
  4. If your team went to State Cup then you have a refund coming; check with Patti.
  5. These teams need to see Patti: Team Zia, Synergy coed, Latin Jules, and 1800s.
  6. Women’s teams that have not paid for field use yet are Katy Kicks, La Pandilla, Synergy, and Latin Jules.
  7. Teams with NSF issues need to see Patti: Latin Jules, Chaos, Challengers, Team Zia.

 

Senior Commissioner

Cassie was late. Jen presided.                                       

  1. Applications for Beaumont Coed tournament are available. Deadline for application is May 14. The tournament is on June 9-10.
  2. Coed National Cup will be in Dallas in late September. June 1 is the deadline to register. The league will pay the bond fee for each team that wants to participate.

 

Women's Commissioner:

1.       The Fiesta tournament was great. La Pandilla won 1st division, Kodiaks won 3rd division, United Cosmos won the Consolation bracket in 3rd division. Way to go, girls.

2.       Memorial Day Tournament is in Dallas, your team needs a travel permit, so give to Cassie to send to State. Allow at least two weeks.

3.       Ok for those of you who want to know standings here they are:

Division 1: Memorial

Division 2: Fever

Division 3: Arsenal/Rangers tie

Division 4: PWC

           

Coed Commissioner:

  1. Standing for Coed as of April 25 are as follows:

1st Division Latin Sharks 1st, Allies 2nd

2nd Division Psychos and Univ. of St. Thomas tied for 1st.

3rd Division Barnestoneworth United 1st, Amistad 2nd

4th Division  Amigos 1st, Hackers 2nd

 

  1. Coed summer season will use mostly unlit fields, all games start at 7 pm (except Independence Park). There will be no bye weeks.

 

Field Coordinator

Stephen was absent. Jen presided.

1. Jen and Stephen met with the City Field Coordinator. Memorial Park might be used for the Fall. There are other fields in the Alief area that we are looking at.

 

 

Tournament

Quickfoot 6v6 is May 19 Bear Creek. Application forms now available. Teams can be formed by any players – don’t have to come from existing teams but must be registered players. If you win you can go to Nationals in Dallas in July.

 

OLD BUSINESS

NEW BUSINESS

Elections:

Nominees were presented: for Vice President-Ben Sharpe (American General)

                 Registrar-Tom Warzywak     

                 Treasurer-Patti Ernst (Los Pinguinos)

                 Secretary-Marlene Tellez (Fever/Hit Squad)

No nominations were made from the floor.

Motion was made and seconded to accept slate as presented. Slate elected with no opposing or abstaining votes. Congrats to new and re-elected members.

 

Team registration for summer coed:

Turn in form and deposit at end of the meeting, and pick up player registration packet. All player registration is due at May 30th meeting.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS     

1.      HWSA will pay for the soda & beer at the player registration meetings in May 30th -- be sure to join us.

2.      Player registration due May 30th.

3.   There is a scholarship available for a goalkeeper from a small college in Kentucky; contact ref assignor Hal Becker (713-466-6719) for more info.
