HWSA is a non-profit association run by volunteers dedicated to promoting the growth of women's soccer of all levels in the greater Houston area. Founded in 1976, HWSA offers outdoor leagues for women's open, coed open, and women's over 30. Approximately 2000 adults participate in HWSA every year. For more information about HWSA, contact president Sara Rice at srice@rice.edu.

After the U.S. victory in the 1999 Women's World Cup, HWSA received a large volume of inquiries about the league, mostly from women who had never played before. With the return of the Women's World Cup to the United States in 2003, HWSA saw another increase in participation, especially among women over 30.

EVENTS & PROJECTS

WUSA in Houston
HWSA hosted the first-ever women's professional soccer exhibition in Houston, with the Atlanta Beat (featuring World Cup goalkeeper Briana Scurry) and the Washington Freedom (featuring Mia Hamm) of the WUSA taking the field at Rice Track/Socccer Stadium on October 19, 2002. The game sold out despite rainy weather. The WUSA returned to Houston in March 2003 for a game between the Atlanta Beat and the San Diego Spirit, which had recently selected Houstonian Susan Bush in the WUSA draft.

Clinics
HWSA offers soccer skills clinics for players of all skill levels several times a year. Clinics are $10 per person, including balls and coach. See clinic details. Occasionally HWSA offers a  goalkeeper clinic.
